API Suppliers for US Importers: A Qualification Map

TL;DR

US importers can source APIs from domestic manufacturers, qualified foreign manufacturing sites, or distributors representing those sites. Choose by the exact molecule and manufacturing site, not headquarters or catalog size. A usable supplier provides current commercial status, GMP and batch documents, importer-aligned entry data, and, when needed, DMF and Letter of Authorization support.

US importers can source APIs through three paths: a domestic manufacturer, a qualified foreign manufacturing site, or a distributor or sourcing partner representing that site. The best supplier is the one that identifies the exact manufacturer and site, confirms commercial availability, and supports the intended US import and regulatory pathway.

A large catalog is only a starting point. An API listing becomes useful when the supplier can match the molecule, salt or form, grade, scale, intended use, documentation, and supply route to your program.

Use this qualification card for every candidate API. Complete it before comparing price or lead time.

What Counts as a US API Supplier?

A US-based company is a company with a US headquarters or legal presence. A US manufacturing site is the physical site that produces the API. Those are different facts.

A foreign manufacturer makes the API outside the United States. An importer or consignee is the party declared in the import entry. A distributor sells material made by another manufacturer. A sourcing partner coordinates supplier selection, documents, logistics, or qualification without necessarily producing or stocking the material.

FDA requires foreign establishments that manufacture, repack, relabel, or salvage APIs for US import to register and list their commercially distributed APIs. Those establishments must also identify known importers in their registration. FDA’s API import rules

Registration is a supply-chain check, not product approval. FDA states that establishment registration or drug listing does not mean an establishment, drug, or product is FDA approved or legally marketable.

For a distributor quote, ask one direct question first: “Who is the legal manufacturer, and what full site address will appear on the COA and entry records?” If the answer changes between the quote, COA, and shipment documents, stop the qualification process.

How Should US Importers Measure Catalog Breadth?

Count four categories separately. Combining them creates an inflated comparison that does not help procurement, QA, or regulatory teams choose a source.

  1. Direct-manufactured commercial APIs: Count a molecule only when the supplier identifies its manufacturing site and confirms commercial availability.

  2. Sourced commercial APIs: Count these separately from direct manufacture. The legal manufacturer and site must be disclosed.

  3. Intermediates: An intermediate is a material used to make an API. It is not an API catalog entry for a finished-dose sourcing decision.

  4. Research compounds and custom synthesis: These show technical capability or R&D availability. They do not prove a commercial supply route.

Our rule of thumb is simple: an API earns a place on your shortlist only after it passes all seven checks below.

  • Exact molecule, salt, form, and grade
  • Intended use and dosage-form fit
  • Current commercial availability
  • Commercial scale or a documented scale-up path
  • Legal manufacturer and physical site
  • Current quality package
  • US filing and import support needed for your program

This method prevents a research listing, an intermediate, and a commercial API from being treated as equal. For a deeper scoring method, use our catalog-breadth guide.

Which Suppliers Show Public Catalog Evidence?

The table below shows why headquarters alone cannot answer “Which API manufacturer serves US importers?” It records the supplier role, actual manufacturing geography where the company publishes it, and the public evidence a buyer can use to begin qualification.

Supplier, Role, VerifiedHeadquartersManufacturing GeographyCatalog and US Evidence
Curia, manufacturer/CDMO, 28 Sep 2026Albany, New YorkUS, France, Italy, Spain, India150+ APIs/intermediates; product-row US DMFs
Aarise Pharma, manufacturer/exporter, 28 Sep 2026Haridwar, IndiaHaridwar, IndiaSteroid, peptide, hormone, general APIs; COA/MSDS; DMF/CEP support
Willow Birch, distributor, 28 Sep 2026Taylor, MississippiManufacturer site supplied per productBulk APIs; US distribution; GMP sources; some open DMFs

Curia publishes a portfolio of 150+ active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates and assigns sites and regulatory submissions to individual catalog entries. That is strong public catalog evidence, but it is not a verified count of commercial APIs alone. Curia’s catalog shows why buyers must separate APIs from intermediates and inspect each product row.

Willow Birch is useful as a US-facing distributor model for North American compounding pharmacies. Its value lies in distribution and supplier qualification, not in being mistaken for the underlying manufacturer. Its product-specific manufacturer and manufacturing site belong in your RFQ and quality package. Willow Birch’s supplier model

At Aarise Pharma, we manufacture and export steroid, peptide, hormone, and general pharmaceutical APIs from Haridwar, India. Our API range includes COA and MSDS documentation with every shipment, while CPP, DMF, and CEP documentation are available for the relevant request. Explore our US API catalog.

API suppliers sell against the molecule, specification, quantity, delivery terms, and documentation scope. Put those requirements in the first RFQ, rather than asking for a generic catalog price.

What Must Be Ready Before US Import?

Start with the planned use. APIs intended for finished-dose drug manufacture, clinical development, and compounding can follow different regulatory paths. FDA notes that bulk drug substances used in compounding must meet the applicable requirements of section 503A or 503B. FDA’s API guidance

The quality package starts with the legal manufacturer, complete site address, current GMP evidence, COA, and specifications. ICH Q7 places responsibility for API batch-release specifications on the API manufacturer. ICH Q7 guidance

For an ANDA, NDA, IND, or other filing-dependent program, request the right DMF evidence. A Type II Drug Master File can contain confidential drug-substance information, but FDA does not approve or disapprove a DMF on its own. FDA reviews it with the application that references it. FDA’s DMF overview

A Letter of Authorization, or LOA, is the document that permits FDA to refer to the DMF for a specified applicant or submission. The DMF holder must submit it, and the applicant must include a copy in its application. FDA’s LOA guidance

At entry, your broker needs data that matches FDA records. FDA reviews the declared manufacturer, declared importer or consignee, product description, intended-use code, and applicable affirmations of compliance. FDA’s import-entry rules

Give the broker the manufacturer and importer details early. FDA says correct entry data and applicable affirmation codes can speed screening, while incomplete data can delay review. FDA’s entry process

Check the proposed site in the DECRS database. Then review FDA’s inspection database for final inspection classifications. The inspection database is useful context, but it does not list every inspection or every compliance action. FDA’s inspection database

Which Sourcing Model Fits Your Program?

Choose manufacturer-direct when your program needs direct technical access, site-level change control, commercial capacity discussions, and filing support. This route suits a defined molecule with a clear quality and regulatory path.

Choose a distributor when you need a US-facing commercial relationship, domestic handling, or established purchase processes. The distributor must still connect every lot to the actual manufacturer, manufacturing site, and quality documents.

Choose managed sourcing when you need help comparing overseas sites or coordinating the manufacturer, seller, importer, and broker. The written scope should assign responsibility for documents, change notifications, shipment records, and shortage escalation.

Use the same supply-risk questions for all three models:

  • What country and site make this exact API?
  • What lead time applies to this grade, quantity, and delivery term?
  • Is inventory held in the United States, and where?
  • Is there an alternate qualified site?
  • Who approves a site, process, specification, or route change?
  • What capacity, safety-stock, or continuity commitment protects the program?

A low unit price cannot offset an unidentified site or an unqualified change path. Build the sourcing decision around the batch you will actually import. Our supplier-capabilities checklist helps turn those questions into an auditable review.

FAQs

Which Pharmaceutical API Supplier Has the Broadest Commercial Catalog?

No supplier can be named the broadest commercial API supplier from raw public catalog totals alone. A defensible comparison counts only current commercial APIs with identified sites, then separates sourced products, intermediates, research materials, and custom synthesis. Curia’s published 150+ total includes APIs and intermediates, which illustrates the distinction. Curia portfolio

Which API Manufacturer Serves US Importers?

An API manufacturer serves US importers when the proposed manufacturing site, API listing, importer relationship, quality documents, and entry data match for the exact molecule. Foreign API establishments that import into the United States must meet FDA registration and listing requirements. FDA import requirements

Who Should Receive a DMF Letter of Authorization?

The applicant or sponsor whose submission references the DMF should receive the LOA copy. The DMF holder submits the authorization to the DMF, and the applicant includes the LOA in the relevant application. FDA DMF guidance

What Should an API RFQ Include?

An API RFQ should name the exact molecule, salt or form, grade, intended use, target quantity, delivery destination, and planned dosage form. It should also ask for the legal manufacturer, manufacturing site, COA, specification, GMP evidence, commercial status, filing support, and change-control terms. Use our steroid API RFQ checklist when the program involves steroid materials.
